Johan Djourou

Johan Djourou

Johan Djourou Biography

A central defender who joined Arsenal as a trainee in August 2003. A commanding and powerful defender who can also play in midfield, he rose through the youth system before making his mark on the first team, featuring in the Carling Cup and then the Barclays Premier League.

A successful loan spell with Birmingham City, where he was mostly used in central midfield, helped launch his career. He returned a more mature player but then suffered a set -back when a knee injury kept him out of action for much of the 2009-10 campaign.

After making a real breakthrough in 2010-11, Johan continued to add to his first-team experience with the Gunners, featuring both at right back and in the centre of the defence. He is a full international for Switzerland and by the summer of 2012 he had won 32 caps for his country.
