Johan Djourou is a central defender who joined Arsenal as a trainee in August 2003. A commanding and powerful defender who can also play in midfield, Johan, he rose through the youth system before making his mark on the first team, featuring in the Carling Cup and then the Premier League. A successful loan spell with Birmingham City, where he was mostly used in central midfield, helped launch his career. He returned a more mature player but then suffered a set back when a knee injury kept him out of action for much of the 2009-10 campaign. Johan recovered to enjoy a real breakthrough in 2010-11, and from October he was a regular in heart of the defence.
