Player Details

Gabriel Obertan is a gifted young attacker who was on the books of Manchester United in 2010-11, having joined the Old Trafford club in the summer of 2009 from Bordeaux. Les Girondins plucked the young Frenchman from the renowned Clairefontaine Academy in 2005 and promoted him to the first-team squad a year later, where he saw limited action as a substitute over the next couple of seasons. Rated as one of the most promising prospects in Europe, he headed out to Lorient at the start of 2009 in search of regular football and returned in the summer to find United trying to take him to Old Trafford, a move that was eventually completed. In his first season in Manchester he caught the eye with his cameo appearances from the bench, showing electric pace and great dribbling ability, but injury and the form of the squad's other wingers limited his opportunities at first-team level. Gabriel has been capped for France at every age group level up to the U21s. In August 2011 he left Old Trafford, signing for Newcastle United.
