David Luiz Biography

A central defender who joined Chelsea in January 2011. A product of Vitoria in his home country, David was not a big name in domestic Brazilian football but moved to Europe in January 2007 joining Benfica.

He flourished in Portugal and became as well known for his rambunctious and thrill-seeking attacking football as he was for his outlandish hairstyle.

He moved to Stamford Bridge in a big-money move which saw Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic move in the opposite direction, and was an instant hit in West London, scoring his first goal for the club against Manchester United.

He became a UEFA Champions League winner in May 2012, partnering Gary Cahill in the centre of defence against Bayern Munich with captain John Terry absent through suspension.

David made his debut for Brazil against the United States in August 2010 and currently has 11 caps.
