Veteran Australians in field for IFQ - Australasia

06 February 2009 17:53
Two of Australia?s most experienced players will be tipped to reach Turnberry when International Final Qualifying, Australasia, commences on 10 February at Kingston Heath Golf Club, located on the Melbourne Sandbelt. Craig Parry and Peter Senior, who have 35 Open starts between them, will be looking to add to impressive Open Championship records that have seen them both register fourth-place finishes: Parry at Carnoustie in 1999 and Senior at Sandwich in 1993.[LNB]Parry, who braved inclement conditions to hit the opening shot at Birkdale last year, first competed in golf?s oldest championship at Muirfield in 1987. If he were to qualify at Kingston Heath, where he will start as the highest-ranked player, the Victorian would reach his 19th Open in 22 years and become one of the few men, including Senior, to have played two Open Championships at Turnberry. [LNB]Senior will be attempting to play his first Open since competing at St Andrews in 2000, however, the 49 year-old has more experience than most having started in seventeen Championships going back to 1979. The Queenslander will feel that he has a good chance of making it to the first tee of The Ailsa this year having recently tied for third place at the Australian PGA Championship and currently occupying 11th place in the PGA Tour of Australasia?s Order of Merit, the highest position of any Australasian Tour player in the Kingston Heath field.[LNB][LNB]Two of last year?s four qualifiers from IFQ Australasia, Andrew Tampion and Peter Fowler, will also be teeing-off in Melbourne on 10 February. Tampion narrowly missed the cut at Birkdale, his first Open Championship, while Fowler will be hoping to make his 13th appearance and improve on his best finish of 22nd place, secured at Sandwich in 2003.[LNB]Play will commence at 07:15 local time on Tuesday 10 February with live scores and stories published on opengolf.com throughout the day.[LNB]The full IFQ Australasia entry list and draw can also be found on opengolf.com[LNB] [LNB][LNB]
