World Twenty20 team guide: England

Are they in it to win it?[LNB]England have few backers to win the competition but there is no doubt that Twenty20 has a knack of producing unlikely champions. Of course, home conditions will suit but England, despite being inventors of the format, are probably one of its most inexperienced teams, as Kevin Pietersen admitted. Players are normally on international duty during the Twenty20 Cup and England have played only six T20 matches at home. Hence a little experimenting in this week's two warm-up matches. "We're trying to find out the right personnel in different scenarios and trying to get a good idea of where the team is," captain Paul Collingwood said. Pietersen and Ravi Bopara are the only two capable of clearing the boundary from the outset and past experience has dampened expectations around the Twenty20 specialists. Having said that, if Graham Napier and James Foster adapt to the pressure it could be a different story. Graeme Swann will have a major role to play and has a solid Twenty20 record with a good wicket-to-run ratio as well as an economy rate just a touch over a run a ball. [LNB]What will happen?[LNB]A semi-final place would be a big achievement for England. If they can win the cup then Twenty20 cricket in England would be back on track. It would be a huge fillip ahead of the launch of the ECB's P20. Defeat to Pakistan in the group stage though, assuming England beat Holland, would leave them a tricky path to negotiate in the super eight stage, where they are likely to meet India, Australia and South Africa.
