Set Pieces Showdown

Preston picked up their first away league win of the season but Graham Westley was far from impressed with the performance.

It was more like a home game for North End as 2,700 fans made the short trip to Gigg Lane making up over half the crowd and filling two of the stands at Bury.

Westley named the same starting eleven that put Swindon to the sword six days earlier and meant that North End are likely to face a fine for not sticking to the JPT rules stating six players must play in the starting line up who started either the previous or next league match.

In any even Preston looked sluggish. Bury are having a por start to the season but took the initiative pushing forward early on and putting the visitors under pressure at every opportunity.Preston could not settle and the wingers were never in the game with Monakana only having one real run of significance which saw Preston push forward.

It was somewhat of a surprise when Preston took the lead approaching half time. Acorner was swung in and Sodje powered home to continue his good form. The away following thought he had hit the side netting and there was a delayed reaction but in truth the keeper should have saved and only ended up pushing the ball into the net.

Even after the break Preston couldn't get going and if they had been playing a team with more confidence then the result may have been different. Preston scored their second from a Laird corner which Sherrif powered home. Again the keeper and defender on the one were helpless due to the power.

The visitors tried to play the game out but Bury pulled on eback from a corner of their own in one of the five added minutes for stoppages but they could not salvage anything from the game.

Westley was disappointed with the performance especially from his widemen and will know that Preston will have to improve away from home with much tougher tests to come if they are to be competing towards the top end of the table come the end of the season.
