Preston North End boss Paul Simpson fears losing Patrick Agyemang for a prolonged period after the striker suffered a recurrence of a hernia problem.
The 26-year-old underwent surgery in the summer to repair a double hernia, but the injury flared up again in training last week and he missed the weekend defeat at Birmingham City.
"We're looking at a strong possibility he will need a spell on the sidelines to rest it," Simpson told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"He's going to see a specialist this week to try and get to the bottom of this problem and find out exactly what we need to do to get rid of it.
"We'd hoped it would go away but it doesn't look like it's going to, so it's best to get it dealt with now.
"I don't think we're looking at surgery but he may need to rest for a while."
