Preston North End have allowed John Halls to return to Reading following the end of his loan spell.
The 25-year-old defender made four appearances for the Lilywhites during an initial month-long spell at the Championship club.
However, following Alan Irvine's appointment as manager last month, the former Stoke City full-back has been told he is surplus to requirements.
"I couldn't guarantee John the games that he would obviously want in order for him to want to extend the loan," he told the club's official website.
"I've spoken to Reading and John and it was agreed that it was best for him to go back there and try and earn a contract at Reading."
