Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson has agreed a deal to bring Manchester United teenager Matthew James to Deepdale on loan until the end of the season.

The highly-rated England Under-20 midfielder, who has still to make his first-team debut for United, had been linked with at least two other Championship clubs, so Ferguson is pleased to have won the race to clinch his signature.

He told Preston's official website: "He's one we've known about for a while. He's a good player who's got great potential.

"The timing was right for him to get out and we've managed to nick in and get him quickly.

"There were a couple of other Championship teams who'd shown an interest in taking him, but fortunately we've got him.

"He's a good passer and got plenty of energy. Richard Chaplow's still injured so I'm pleased to get him on board, he's a good one for us."
