Irvine upset at card decision
30 Apr 2009 - 10:34:46
Preston North End boss Alan Irvine has revealed his 'surprise and disappointment' after failing with an appeal to overturn a red card shown to Lee Williamson last weekend.
The Lilywhites hoped to have the midfielder's red card - shown following a tussle with Birmingham City's Lee Bowyer - rescinded.
However, the Football Association chose to uphold the punishment and Williamson will now be banned for the next three games.
"It's a decision which has surprised and disappointed me," said Irvine.
"We're asking for an explanation, which I think we're entitled to.
"Everyone I've spoken to in football believes that Lee was not guilty of violent conduct. That includes Keith Hackett and David Allison from the PGMOL (referees' body).
"I consulted these people before making the appeal because I didn't want to waste anybody's time.
"They believed and I believe that we had a very strong case."
