Irvine predicts Mellor return

Preston North End boss Alan Irvine believes that striker Neil Mellor has the quality needed to make a return to top-flight football.

The 26-year-old former Liverpool frontman has suffered numerous injury problems during his career, with his stay at Deepdale badly affected by a number of setbacks.

However, Mellor started this season in fine form, before being dropped to the bench and scoring his first goal in nine games in the 2-2 draw with Norwich City.

Irvine told the Lancashire Evening Post: "Neil wants to get back into the Premier League and he has certainly got the ability to do that. He just needs to keep doing what he did today on a regular basis.

"He has had a little dip recently and that is why he wasn't in the starting line-up, but hopefully now he is on his way back."
