Preston North End boss Paul Simpson is being linked with a move for former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson, as he bids to bolster his forward line at Deepdale.
The former Scotland international is still without a club following the end of his Toffees contract at the end of last season, despite reported interest from the likes of Wigan, Portsmouth and Norwich City.
However, with Simpson failing in a bid to sign Arsenal youngster Arturo Lupoli on loan and his Gunners team-mate Nicklas Bendtner opting to join Birmingham City, Ferguson's name appears to be high on the wanted list.
Simpson would only confirm his failure to sign the Arsenal duo but revealed he does have other targets.
He told the club's official website: "We have also enquired about other strikers, it isn't proving easy at all but we do have a couple of other irons in the fire.
"We're still waiting to here back from one club, while another player we have been looking at close to returning after injury, so we will be keeping a close eye on him and we hope to have more luck soon."
