Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson was in jubilant mood after his side's 2-1 win against Championship rivals Sheffield United on Tuesday evening.

The former Peterborough United boss enjoyed turning 38 thanks to debutant Matt James and Jon Parkin finding the target at Deepdale.

Ferguson's third win in six games at the helm has aided their outside play-off chances and made his birthday one to remember.

Speaking to reporters after the game, he said: "That was the best performance since I've been here.

"I thought we were excellent to a man, and it's miles better to celebrate my birthday this way than with a cake.

"From the start we were on the front foot, our energy levels were far better and the tempo was raised."
