Preston's six game winning streak came to an end as they bowed out of the League Cup away to highflying Championship side Southampton at St Mary's. Phil Brown made ten changes to the side that were victorious at Brentford with keeper, Arestidou, the only player who kept his place in the starting line up. The Whites were a mix of youth and experience with Ashbee, Morgan and Russell recalled as Daley made his debut. Bailey Wright started at the back with Danny Mayor and Adam Barton given starts. Preston went behind just before the half hour mark but Adam Barton equalised after ten minutes of the second half. The score wasn't level for long with Llallana scoring the winner after 66 minutes.
