A profile of our new number 20, who made his Lilywhite debut tonight. Tom Williams was born in Carshalton and statred with non-league Walton & Hersham. On 3 April 2000 Williams signed for West Ham for £60,000. He didn’t make an appearance for the Hammers and joined Peterborough on loan on 22 March 2001. His league debut came in a 2-1 defeat at Swindon on 28 April and the move was made permanent during the summer. His first goal came in a 3-2 home win over Blackpool in October 2001 He stayed with the Posh for one season, before moving to Championship side Birmingham for a fee of £350,000 on 12 March 2003. His career stalled at St. Andrews, playing just four games for Birmingham. He had a season long loan for 2002/03 and a further loan in August 2003 with QPR. Williams rejoined Peterborough for the second time in December 2003 on loan. In May 2004 Williams went to Barnsley on a free transfer, before moving again on a free transfer to Gillingham in July 2005. He signed for Swansea on New Years Day 2006 for £50,000 as a replacement for Sam Ricketts at left back after the Gills suffered financial problems. Appearances were limited in the 2006/07 season due to a hernia operation and other hernia related injuries before being released by the club on 7 May 2007. On 27 July 2007, he joined Wycombe on a two-year deal. On 31 December 2007 Williams joined Peterborough for the third time, initially on an emergency loan to make him available for the match on New Year's Day, for which he was an unused substitute. The loan was converted to a two-year permanent deal two days later. On 9 November 2009, Williams rejoined QPR on a short term loan deal before returning to Peterborough during January 2010 and signing for Preston on loan in February 2010 and to wear the number 20 shirt. . Williams qualifies for Cyprus through his mother, and has one international cap to date, which came in 2006 in Romania.
