New Preston recruit Darel Russell admits he signed his three-year deal with a view to reaching the Barclays Premier League.
The 29-year-old was a key figure in Norwich's League One promotion campaign last term but turned down the offer of a new deal at Carrow Road.
The former Stoke man is delighted to have joined North End after being impressed by Darren Ferguson's desire to reach the top flight.
Russell said: "The plan for every team is to try and reach that promised land.
"I don't think anyone starting this season from day one doesn't have that objective.
"If you don't have that aim and objective then I don't think you should be in this league."
