Rodgers proud of Royals display

Going into the game the Royals had only claimed two points from 12 since their only other league win this season; a 3-1 victory at Barnsley on August 29. However first-half strikes from Simon Church and Jimmy Kebe ultimately put the home side to the sword as they could manage just one - Jon Parkin from the penalty spot - in reply. "It was a good game," said Rodgers. "I'm really pleased. I thought we were outstanding, especially in the first half, like we have been in a lot of games. "We were very good with the ball and went 2-0 up and I thought we were exceptional in the first half with or without the ball. "Tactically we were strong and going into second half we knew Alan (Irvine) is an outstanding coach, so we knew his team would come out and give it a go. "We had a chance to kill the game and then from that moment the game turned a bit but that's the nature of it "They are the home team and they have to come out and we played a bit more on the counter-attack. "But we had to defend and defend well. It was a great mark of our team to come to a place like this and beat a very good team who will be up there. "I was really proud of the players tonight." Reading's form on the road is in stark contrast to that at the Madjeski Stadium where they have taken just three points from their opening five games. Rodgers added: "I just think it's a matter of time at home. We've played well in a lot of our games, especially at home. "We play like that at home but we just fail to kill teams off, tonight we were able to do that but it's because it's a totally new group. "We've lost millions of pounds worth of talent in the summer and it's a rebuilding process, we're growing every day as a group. The home performances will come." Preston boss Alan Irvine, whose side remain third in the table despite their defeat, was far more concerned with his side's sorry first-half showing than in taking any positives from their improved second-half display. He summed up the game simply. "Not acceptable first half, excellent second half," he said. "We've come back from being 2-0 down before and I thought we could do it again and how many chances did we have? "We've hit the woodwork three times and their goalkeeper has made some great saves - we could still have come back. "I always believe we can come back if we apply ourselves properly."
