Simon Grayson looking to add a right-back ahead of Hartlepool clash

Preston manager Simon Grayson is keen to sign a right-back before Hartlepool visit Deepdale in the first round of the EFL Cup.

With Calum Woods already out for the season, Liam Grimshaw was hauled off at half-time in the 1-0 defeat at Reading on Saturday after struggling in a wing-back role.

Skipper Tom Clarke moved from centre-back to full-back as a result, but hobbled off with a hamstring strain and is a major doubt for Tuesday.

Chris Humphrey is likely to fill in should no replacement be signed in time, while forward Stevie May is still recovering from a knee ligament operation which has sidelined him since December.

Hartlepool boss Craig Hignett has no fresh injury concerns after Saturday's 1-1 League Two draw with Colchester.

Midfielder Nicky Featherstone was unable to train fully last week because of a groin problem but was declared fit for the weekend and got through 73 minutes before being replaced by Michael Woods.

Featherstone suffered no reaction to his exertions against the U's and is expected to be available once again.

Hignett has only Jake Orrell missing with the young striker still working his way back to fitness after sustaining a thigh injury during pre-season.
