Preston captain John Welsh begins a two-match suspension when Simon Grayson's men host struggling Carlisle.

The central midfielder has accrued 10 yellow cards this season, the most recent of which came in the draw with Bristol City and triggered an automatic two-match ban.

Grayson could be able to call upon full-back Scott Wiseman (knee) and striker Stuart Beavon (flu) after the pair missed out at Ashton Gate.

Paul Gallagher was an unused substitute in Bristol and the forward could also come into consideration.

Carlisle pair Lee Miller and Matty Robson are both hoping to return to action following injury.

Striker Miller has missed the last two games due to a stomach muscle problem, while left-back Robson, the Cumbrians' player of the year last season, has been sidelined for six weeks with a back injury.

Midfielder James Berrett will sit out a one-game ban following his dismissal for two yellow-card offences in last week's home win against Swindon.

That was the Cumbrians' first win in nine matches and kept them out of the bottom four on goal difference.
