It was always going to be a tough ask playing two games in just over 48 hours. Grayson clearly set out his priorities ina pre-match interview stating he had the option to move the game to Wednesday but did not want to intrude on preparation for the Walsall game on Saturday.
In truth fitness was never a problem with Preston making six changes from their 4-4 draw at Coventry. There was alsoa change of formation to a wing back set up which was the first time under Grayson's regime.
Stuckmann was handed a first start in goals this season whilst Clarke, Huntington and Wright made upa back three. Laird was given his first start since breaking his leg last year with Humphrey on the other flank.
Holmes was given a free role wilst Keane captained alongside Byrom in midfield. Beavon and Hume started up front which was a test given their lack of game time this season.
The game started in the poorest possible manner for Preston. The homes side had a free kick some thirty yards out and central. Trippier hit a dipping shot over the wall. Stuckmann assumed the ball was swerving and moved from his central position only to realise the ball was dead straight. He tried to correct himself but it was too late and the error cost Preston.
Burnley then had the odd opportunity here and there but Preston gradually clawed there way back into the game and zipped the ball around well at times often without any end product.
The home side doubled their lead through a touch of fortune as Ings was inside the box when the ball ricocheted of a defender's legs allowing him clean through to slot home.
Humphrey troubled Burnley down the right and before the break Byrom had a header well save. North End had a lot of possession in the second half as Burnley were content with the lead.
There were times when Preston may have done better but ultimately they could not pull anything back in front of a large contingent in the away end.
Grayson was not too disappointed with the Cup exit and will now concentrate on Saturday's match at Walsall as Preston try to pick up their first league win of the season.
