Preston Edge Seven Goal Thriller
Preston tried their hardest to throw away what should have been a comfortable victory as Yeovil came close to clawing their way back into the game and claiming a point. The Whites had the majority of posession in the game and looked good going forward. They took an early lead with Jamie Proctor firing home after five minutes and Preston looked comfortable. Yeovil posed little threat until the half hour mark when a jittery Preston allowed the visitors time and space with a cross put into the box. The Whites failed to defend and clear the ball which ended up at the feet of Edgar who slotted home nicely on the volley. Yeovil sensed that there might be something in this game although Preston always seemed to have an extra gear. Just after half time Nicholson scored to restore Preston's lead. Mellor then showed his finishing ability and why he should score a bagful of goals this season. He made it 3-1 and Preston seemed to be cruising to an easy three points. Amazingly, Preston then managed to hit the post three times with Nicholson, Proctor and Mellor all missing chances which hit the woodwork. The Whites should have been out of sight. The game then changed when Maclean for Yeovil had a pot shot from thirty yards out. Turner was off his line and the shot was at a reasonable height but the keeper only mangaged to push the ball into the air and behind him. Turner fantically went backwards but could only push the ball further into the net. Preston then hit the net again with Mellor scoring a second and giving Preston a two goal lead with twenty minutes to go and that should have been that. A ball was then played into the Preston box and Clarke Carlisle was quite harshly adjudged to have handled with a penalty given. Maclean concerted the spot kick and the last ten minutes were very frantic. Yeovil missed to gilt edged chances with a free left footed shot in the box drifting wide and in injury time Turner having to come to Preston's rescue to save the Whites. Preston now wait for the Saturday results before heading away over the next couple of weeks before facing Tranmere at Deepdale.
