Preston Dumped Out Of Cup

To say this was an upset would be unfair on highflying Southend who defended well in the first match and did enough to overcome a wretched North End in the replay at Roots Hall.

The statistics don't matter save for Dickinson scoring for the home side on the half hour mark. Preston were knocked out of the FA Cup at the First Round stage for the first time in a long time and still have the inability to keep a clean sheet.

Many have given Phil Brown the benefit of the doubt so far but Preston's winless run now goes back two months and 12 games. Even Trevor Hemmings who is quicker than Alan Sugar at the firing game must be getting tetchy now.

Brown has rotated his players to the back and beyond. He has staked all on two players being fit - Mellor and Hume. He has hardly inspired confidence in the rest of the squad and defensively Preston look as poor as they were under Ferguson.

There is something evidently wrong at Preston. Either the players that were credible at Champiosnhip level really were punching two leagues above their weight or Phil Brown has lost the confidence of the players in a short space of time after winning seven on the trot earlier this season.

Brown may be given more time but until Preston get back to basics especially with defending and sticking to one formation with the same players week in week out Preston will continue to stutter.
