The Wolves defender, 26, has joined initially on loan until January 4, when he is then expected to become a fully-fledged North End player. Collins has won promotion to the top flight with Sunderland in 2005 and with Wolves last season and Irvine said: "I'm absolutely delighted. "Neill is a proven player at this level, he's just turned 26 so he's a really good age for a centre-back and he's enjoyed two promotions from the Championship with Sunderland and Wolves. "We've managed to add a very experienced Championship defender who I believe has even more chances of developing if he plays regularly. I think he'll prove to be an excellent signing, in the short term, and hopefully in the long term for us." Meanwhile, North End's Carling Cup third round clash at home to Tottenham will take place on Wednesday, September 23 with a 7.45pm kick-off and will not be televised.
