North End boss seeks travel cure

North End's pre-season programme involves matches in Austria, Wales, Scotland and England to help improve on the dire away record which cost them promotion last term. In addition to two home games against Premier League sides Stoke City and Wigan Athletic, it will involve a friendly near the club's Alpine training camp, a brief trip north of the border, a visit to North Wales and a clutch of games in Lancashire and Merseyside. "We're hoping we have gauged it just right and we can have the same successful start to next season that we enjoyed last time," Irvine told the Lancashire Evening Post. "We were offered Spanish, German, French or Dutch clubs coming here to Deepdale, but I said 'no' because it's a different style of football and I don't think it would be the right sort of preparation we need for a season in the Championship."
