North End are rock-bottom of the table and lie 11 points adrift of safety, but Nicholson says there has been an improvement since Phil Brown arrived last month.
Brown has yet to taste victory but Nicholson, who scored a spectacular equaliser in Saturday`s 1-1 draw with leaders QPR, insists his side can still beat the drop.
He said: "We definitely believe we can get out of this situation.
"When one win comes we will quickly get two or three.
"Since Phil Brown came in as manager we are better organised."
