Nicholson making progress

Preston midfielder Barry Nicholson is expected to start playing football again in three weeks following his lengthy lay-off with a broken leg. The 32-year-old suffered a double-fracture of his right leg during a 2-0 win over Peterborough nearly 14 months ago but was thought to be over the problem after turning out for the Lilywhites on the final day of last season against Reading, only to suffer a recurrence of the injury. However, after adopting a cautious approach in his recovery, Nicholson says he is now closing in on full fitness and is keen to get back and repay the faith shown in him by North End boss Darren Ferguson. He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "I've been training with the boys for a few weeks. The leg feels really good now and I'm building up my fitness. "I had a chat with the gaffer the other day and we're looking towards me playing in the reserves on October 27. So I'm only three weeks away from playing again, which is brilliant. "I've missed a lot of football. This is the last year of my contract, so I want to get back on the pitch and give something back to the club and the gaffer, who have stood by me."
