I Was There When Holroyd Scored

Two fairly average teams played out a distinctly average ninety minutes at Boundary Park as neither side did enough to warrant all three points.

Preston lined up with Holroyd and Cummins up front as Hume's season now appears to be over. The back four remained the same whilst Coutts and Mayor played on the wings.

The game lacked any creativity with Mayor having an off day and the only Coutts when he drifted in from the right ever looked like having the skill to break down the Oldham defence.

The hme side had the first chance he Simpson ws put through on the left. He shot right footed over the bar but should have done better. Stuckmann was relatively untroubled on a day where the fans celebrated his name.

Holroyd forced the Oldham keeper into a save with a shot from distance. Moments later Preston should have taken the lead when Proctor headed just wide from a corner when left free in the box.

The break couldn't come soon enough when Sean Gregan was paraded to the crowd, half of which was made up of a strong following for Preston. The visiting fas didn't have much to cheer.

Oldham took the lead after the break when Preston failed to mark at a set piece allowing a near post header to fly into the back of the net after the defnece had been tight for most of the game.

The visitors then spurred themselves into action and forced an equaliser from their best piece of play. Coutts managed to draw the defence in before passing out to Mayor who crossed from the byline. Holroyd managed to nod home from less than a yard out for his first goal.

Some of the celebrations were almost irnoic for a player who had a poor record at Rotherham and had failed to impress until today when he put in a half decent shift.

A further cheer greeted the eit of Andy Proctor as Preston settled for a point in the end which makes them mathmatically safe. Westley will have to significantly improve the squad if they are to return to Boundary Park next year with aspirations of three points.
