Hayes happy to adapt

Preston striker Paul Hayes is hoping to be given the nod by boss Darren Ferguson to play just behind the main striker this season. The free transfer signing from Scunthorpe revelled in that role in Tuesday's 3-0 friendly win over Blackburn, scoring twice and dovetailing effectively with Chris Brown. Hayes played just behind Brown and said: "That is my preferred position but the gaffer has his formation and how he wants to work it. "As the years have gone on this 4-4-2 business is out of the window because you need adapt to different tactics and different formations. "That is what we are trying to do really during games and that is obviously where we need to get better at."
