Scunthorpe manager Ian Baraclough insists the door remains open for former Iron striker Paul Hayes to return to Glanford Park.
United tried to keep hold of the 27-year-old but he quit the club for a second time at the end of last season to join Championship rivals Preston.
However, Hayes has struggled to make an impact at Deepdale and has been loaned out to Barnsley, where he has spent a lot of time on the bench.
"Paul is someone I have kept in contact with," Baraclough told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "He is unhappy at Preston and has rung me from time to time for advice.
"He has gone now and we have to move on but if his agent was to ring me, then I would be silly not to talk to him.
"I am sure though, we would not be the only club interested in him if he wanted to leave Preston."
