When in the 78th minute the fourth official held up the board saying that number 43 was replacing number 8, not many at Edgeley Park would have known that almost a 36 year record was being broken. The introduction of number 43, central midfielder Doyle Middleton at the age of 16 years 122 days became the youngest player to play for Preston North End. He beat the previous record holder Steve Doyle by 45 days when he made his debut in the number 4 shirt under manager Bobby Charlton. Preston on that day lost the Third division fixture 3-1  at Tranmere on 15 November 1974.      Doyle Middleton had been recommended to the club by his PE teacher whilst playing for Ainsdale where he had joined from Manchester United.
