Ferguson desperate to bolster squad
Boss Darren Ferguson is refusing to take any risks with injuries during pre-season as he continues to try and cope with a small squad at Preston.
The former Peterborough chief is adamant he needs more players and is in the market for fresh blood, with an unnamed midfielder closing in on a move to Deepdale, while a winger and a striker are also on his radar.
Ferguson is already dealing with small numbers and was stretched further when he was forced to be without injured trio Jon Parkin (hamstring), Callum Davidson (calf) and Wayne Brown (hip) for Saturday's 3-0 friendly defeat by Everton.
"We aren't taking any risks with injuries at this stage," Ferguson told the Lancashire Evening Post. "Callum felt a bit tight in his calf...he's had injuries before and knows his own body so we felt it best he should sit the game out.
"Wayne has got a problem with his back, we'll have to get it assessed and speak with the doctor about it. He has been struggling in pre-season to be able to cope with the physical side of things."
On possible transfer activity, he added: "I know the finances are a little bit tight but at the end of the day I can't go into the season with 16 players. The chairman is working hard to make things happen, negotiations are quite far down the road with a midfield player, a different type to what we've got."
