FA Charge Lonergan

15 September 2010 15:25
The FA have today confirmed that they have charged goalkeeper Andy Lonergan with using abusive and or provocative gestures towards Burnley fans last Saturday. Lonergan has been photographed giving two and one fingered salutes to the crowd. The family paper, the Lancashire Evening Telegraph decided to publish these shots on their website. Although it is unclear from the photos who the salutes were aimed at, complaints from the home fans obviously verify that offence was taken by them at Lonergan's actions. Obviously families were in attendance and the actions cannot be tolerated with youngsters in the ground which is somewhat a bemusement as to why a local paper would then publish them on their website. In any event, Lonergan has Monday to respond to the charge although it seems hardly a case to fight. It is expected that his punishment would be a fine or potentially a ban although the keeper has an otherwise clean record which could mitigate any punishment. The police are not going to take any criminal prosecution further.
