Scolari stays upbeat

09 Jul 2006 - 11:41:35

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari announced himself happy with his side's efforts, despite their 3-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup third-place play-off.

The Brazilian felt that his team had given a good account of themselves, despite being soundly beaten by the hosts in Stuttgart.

He said: "I feel satisfied and glad with the way things have turned out overall.

"At the end, even by ending on a defeat, we're still one of the best four teams in the world.

"Germany played very well and was more efficient than we were. We lacked effectiveness in front of goal and we lacked quality and precision in our shots.

"We had some chances, but we didn't take them like Germany did.

"If you lose a game like this, you go back to your country with the image of defeat when it should be that we are one of the four best nations in the world.

"It's difficult to explain, it's a game which, in my opinion, should not take place."
