Wolves v Portsmouth preview

02 October 2009 11:28
Portsmouth will be aiming to put a week of controversy behind them as they hunt for points at Wolves on Saturday. The South Coast club have endured a torrid start to the season, both on and off the field, having lost all of their opening seven fixtures while suffering a financial crisis following delays to Sulaiman Al Fahim's takeover in the summer. The turbulent campaign took another blow after Thursday's announcement that the first-team squad and board members had not been paid September's wages before reports that Al Fahim was admitted to hospital broke on Friday. Pompey boss Paul Hart takes his bottom-placed side to Molineux to face a Wolves team looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Sunderland last time out. Mick McCarthy's West Midlands outfit have been quietly going about their business this season as the promoted club have amassed seven points, including an excellent win against Fulham in their last home outing. Castillo blowBut after the 5-2 reverse against the Black Cats last weekend, McCarthy will target the forthcoming fixture as a must-win game in Wolves' quest for survival, but he is forced to do so without injured midfielder Segundo Castillo. The Ecuador international, who conceded a dubious penalty for Sunderland's first goal in the defeat at the Stadium of Light, sustained a hamstring injury and was substituted at half-time. Castillo's replacement on Sunday, Michael Kightly, could make his first Premier League start against Pompey, allowing Dave Edwards to slot back into his preferred role in centre-midfield. Striker Chris Iwelumo and defender Richard Stearman both came through a midweek reserve game against Chelsea to step up their return to first-team action, but midfielder Dave Jones is ruled out for two months after undergoing knee surgery. Finnan bowPortsmouth defender Steve Finnan may have to wait in the wings to make his long-awaited debut despite coming through a reserve match against West Ham in midweek. Finnan has been struggling with a hamstring injury since his summer switch from Espanyol and is yet to make a first-team appearance, but the former Liverpool man will not be risked from the start and is likely to be on the bench. Papa Bouba Diop has stepped up his training but the midfielder is still suffering with a hamstring injury, as is defender Herman Hreidarsson and Richard Hughes is also out. Hart received praise for his positive in his team selection in the Everton defeat last weekend so expect Pompey to line up with two strikers as they bid to get off the mark this term. Possible starting XIs: Portsmouth: James, Ben-Haim, Williamson, Kaboul, Vanden Borre, O'Hara, Mokoena, Prince-Boateng, Brown, Dindane, Piquionne. Wolves: Hennessey, Elokobi, Berra, Mancienne, Halford, Jarvis, Edwards, Henry, Kightly, Keogh, Doyle.
