Williamson hopes to blaze trail

Portsmouth defender Mike Williamson believes more Premier League managers should be scouring the lower leagues for emerging talent. Just over nine months ago, Williamson was plying his trade in League Two with Wycombe, but now finds himself rubbing shoulders with the global elite in England's top flight. The 25-year-old left Adams Park to join Championship side Watford in January before landing his big break as Paul Hart brought him to Fratton Park during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. And while Williamson is still to make his Pompey bow, he has no doubts about his ability to make the grade at the very highest level. "Regardless of what happens to you, you need self belief and now I think I'm good enough to prove myself on this stage," he told The News. Talent"It was never a case of dropping back and settling down. That's why you have goals and that's why you set targets for yourself, personally. "I think it was just a matter of time, working hard and seeing where that took me. "Going from League Two to the Premier League still does happen but not as often now. I suppose the vast amount of players Premier League teams can pick from all over the world has maybe changed that. "But there is a lot of good talent in the lower leagues and I think there is a lot to be said for it. "I think a lot of players I have played with and played against could come into the Premier League. There is a lot of untapped talent down there. "I think maybe people need that opportunity to prove themselves on that stage. It's unbelievable coming from there and rising to a Premier League club like this."
