Whittingham Confirmed As Portsmouth Manager
Pompey's worst kept secret made official.
Guy Whittingham has been confirmed as the permanent manager of Portsmouth Football Club after an announcement that came of no surprise to anyone.
Whittingham has been given a one-year rolling contract which makes sense. There is no need to reward any manager with such a huge deal despite the recent great form of the team. We all know in football how quickly things can change.
Despite that, it's difficult to think of anyone better to begin the rebuilding of this great football club. Guy is "Pompey through and through" and has restored some pride to this club with recent results. He understands how this club works and the fans will give him their full backing.
The only surprising thing was that Andy Awford hasn't been confirmed as his assistant yet. In fact, no back room staff has been announced thus far but it is fully expected to be the usual faces that play an important part at Pompey.
New chairman Iain McInnes has stated that Guy will have a "competitive" budget for next season in League Two but given that the competition ranges from Bradford City to Dagenham & Redbridge, that statement is completely ambigous.
It was also announced that season ticket information will be released in the next couple of weeks but apart from that there was little for Pompey fans to get their teeth into.
Still, whilst fans may complain about the so-called lack of information we need to remember that the Trust has an entire football club to rebuild after the damage done by various individuals in the last six years or so.
This is going to take time and the people in charge deserve that time to turn things around. Sure, if things have gone spectacularly awry by this time next year then the supporters' vitriol will be expected.
However, for now, we should give the people in charge some time to make their mark and secure the club's future.
