Wembley set to get new pitch

A new pitch is to be laid at Wembley in the wake of heavy criticism of the playing surface at the national football stadium.[LNB] The pitch was heavily criticised by three of the four managers of the the FA Cup semi-finalists and PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor described it as an "embarrassment".[LNB]The FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth is the next match to be played at the stadium and a new pitch will be in place by then.[LNB]"Wembley Stadium can confirm that a new pitch will be installed, with work commencing today," a statement on Sunday said.[LNB]"We will continue working with The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) to install and maintain the new turf.[LNB]"The pitch will be the same type as was used in the latter part of last year.[LNB]"We will continue to refine the installation and maintenance regime to build on the formula that was successful during that period.[LNB]"Wembley and STRI feel confident that we will be able to deliver and sustain a good pitch at Wembley for our busy football schedule in May."[LNB]The stadium hosted a Guinness Premiership rugby union match between Saracens and Harlequins on Saturday.
