Villa look to beat Sunderland to wantaway Pompey defender Distin

Aston Villa hope to beat Sunderland to a deal for defender Sylvain Distin. Portsmouth want £5million and Sunderland are willing to pay, but the 31-year-old Frenchman has his heart set on Villa. Boss Martin O'Neill must now improve his £3m offer using cash from the £4m sale of Zat Knight to Bolton. Sunderland are also in talks with Sedan defender Paul Baysse.
