Utaka joins Pompey ranks

Portsmouth have completed a double signing by snapping up Rennes striker John Utaka to add to the capture of Preston North End's England frontman David Nugent.

Twenty-five-year-old Nigeria forward Utaka had been with Rennes for two seasons, having joined them from fellow French club Lens in the summer of 2005.

Utaka has agreed a four-year deal with Pompey and is looking forward to the new challenge of life in England.

He commented: "I've dreamed of playing in the Premier League and this is a great opportunity.

"I spoke to Kanu, who was my national team captain, and he told me it was a great place to come."

Nugent has tied up a £6million move to Fratton Park from Preston, penning a four-year contract with the South Coast club.

Lilywhites boss Paul Simpson said after losing his star player: "It's a great move for him. We've got decent money for him and we wish him all the best for his future career.

"It's up to him now to go out and show people that he can play at Premier League level."
