The Forgotten Man
Webber suffers a setback on the comeback trail. Pompey fans are rightfully concerned about the lack of forward options at the club at the moment, with only David Nugent, Dave Kitson and Kanu available as out-and-out strikers. However, it seems that some of us have forgotten all about Danny Webber. A few fans that I work with had completely forgotten that the 28-year-old was on Pompey's books until the local news printed an article today to inform us of the luckless striker's latest setback.Because of pain in front of the patellar tendon it will not be until 2011 at earliest until Webber makes his first appearance in a Pompey shirt since March when he ruptured his cruciate ligaments at Tottenham. You have to feel some sympathy for the man whose career has been blighted by injuries. Who knows what he could have made for himself if he had stayed clear of them because once-upon-a-time young Danny was banging them in for Watford and Sheffield United before the treatment room came calling.I do wonder if there is any future at Fratton Park for Webber. With such a small squad he would be a useful addition to the playing staff if he could find something like his best form or at least show Steve Cotterill he is capable of contributing something to the team whilst he gains match practice. If he can't, I fear he'll be released at the end of the season when his contract expires and he will be cast into the footballer's wilderness, whilst Pompey will again have to search the bargain basement to provide some competition for our current strikers.
