S.O.S to Sven: Portsmouth want former England boss Eriksson

10 February 2009 03:11
Sven Goran Eriksson has been asked to rescue Portsmouth[LNB]from relegation following the dismissal of Tony Adams. [LNB]Sportsmail [LNB]revealed on Monday that Eriksson, currently in charge of Mexico, was on the Fratton Park shortlist. [LNB]Eriksson, preparing his team to face the USA in a vital World Cup qualifier on Wedneday, has already been contacted through intermediaries and is interested in a sensational return to English football. [LNB][LNB] Spec-saver: Porstmouth want Sven Goran Eriksson to help them beat the drop[LNB]In another twist, Portsmouth face his former club Manchester City[LNB]at Fratton Park on Saturday lunchtime and they want their new manager in place before that crunch clash. [LNB]The former England manager, who still has a flat in London to which he often returns, fears a backlash from furious Mexico fans if he accepts the job before the USA clash but he is tempted by the offer of the chance to keep the Pompey Chimes ringing out in the Barclays Premier League. [LNB]Incredibly, Pompey are prepared to let Eriksson job-share with his international role if he can convince owner Alexandre Gaydamak and executive chairman Peter Storrie he can save them from relegation.[LNB] I'm surprised that Portsmouth sacked me, says Adams after just four wins in 22 games [LNB]Portsmouth hit the panic button and sack Adams after just 22 games, with Avram Grant and Sven on Pompey's list of targets[LNB]EXCLUSIVE: Adams: My first and last interview as manager of Portsmouth[LNB]2008/09 sack race - the full list of managerial departures this season [LNB]PORTSMOUTH FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB] [LNB]Adams left the club on Sunday after a 15-game reign with Portsmouth one point clear of the bottom three following their latest defeat through Fernando Torres's last-minute winner for Liverpool [LNB]at Fratton Park. [LNB]Eriksson's last game in this country with City ended in an 8-1 defeat at Middlesbrough[LNB]in May 2008. He was sacked after one season at Eastlands. [LNB]Adams feared the worst on Saturday evening following the 3-2 loss to Liverpool and reluctantly took the call from Storrie that confirmed that he was sacked on Sunday evening. [LNB]Despite pleading for more time to transform their fortunes, his failure to improve on victories over Sunderland[LNB]and Blackburn[LNB]last year led to his downfall.[LNB] Driven man: Adams leaves Portsmouth's training ground on Monday morning[LNB] [LNB]He was saved from the sack by his players when Storrie conducted some impromptu market research following a defeat at Fulham[LNB]the previous Saturday, with Peter Crouch, Sylvain Distin and David James all supporting him. [LNB]But, after leading twice against Liverpool they could not hold out for a much-needed victory and Adams was heading for the chop. [LNB]He arrived at the training ground yesterday to collect his personal effects, claiming surprise at being sacked. [LNB]Adams said: 'Results have not been good but we've not been getting beaten 4-0 or 6-0 so I'm a little bit surprised. [LNB]End of the road: Adams failed to muster enough wins to prevent Pompey giving him the chop[LNB] 'We've been losing by the odd goals and performances on the whole have been OK. I did everything but it wasn't quite enough. We're in a results industry and the owner and chairman will point to that, but I haven't had a lot of time and certainly the financial backing. [LNB]'I was still up for the challenge and the players worked their socks off against Liverpool on Saturday. The fans were really supportive of me and the team and that gave me encouragement for the challenge ahead. It's not my decision to go. [LNB]'There's more than a third of the season to go and I know the players at Portsmouth are good enough to stay up. The club deserve to stay up for their magnificent fans and I wish them well.' [LNB]Although many of the squad, including James and Crouch, were on international duty, David Nugent, a scorer against Liverpool, claimed that Adams deserved longer.[LNB] Too little, too late: Nugent's goal against Liverpool ultimately proved to be a consolation as defeat sealed Tony Adams' eventual departure[LNB] [LNB]He said: 'He called me aside and said I'd done well for him in the past few games, scoring a couple of goals. He gave me a chance and I was happy for him to stay. I thought he deserved a few more games but it's the chairman's decision.' [LNB]Youth academy director Paul Hart, who managed Nottingham Forest and Leeds, has taken temporary charge of team affairs, but Portsmouth hope to make a swift appointment.[LNB] I'm surprised that Portsmouth sacked me, says Adams after just four wins in 22 games [LNB]Portsmouth hit the panic button and sack Adams after just 22 games, with Avram Grant and Sven on Pompey's list of targets[LNB]EXCLUSIVE: Adams: My first and last interview as manager of Portsmouth[LNB]2008/09 sack race - the full list of managerial departures this season [LNB]PORTSMOUTH FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB] [LNB] [LNB]
