Redknapp to keep Benjani
11 Jun 2007 - 13:32:22
Harry Redknapp has warned any clubs interested in signing Benjani Mwaruwari that he has no intention of letting the Zimbabwe striker leave Fratton Park.
Benjani, who Pompey signed for £4.4million from Auxerre in January 2006, has been linked with a return to France with Marseille.
The 28-year-old has netted just seven times for Pompey - six of which came last season - but Redknapp claims he needs more strikers at the club and will not cash in on Benjani.
The Pompey boss has just three forwards - Benjani, Lomana LuaLua and Andy Cole - currently on the books at the south coast club.
Kanu and Svetoslav Todorov are out of contract this summer and have yet to agree new contract offers.
"It's the first I've heard of Marseille's interest in Benjani," he told the Portsmouth News.
"Benjani has done okay. He works hard for the team and scored half-a-dozen goals last season. I need strikers around.
"I need at least one, maybe two more strikers this summer. You're in trouble if you haven't got people to score you goals."
Meanwhile, Redknapp has played down reports of moves for Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg and QPR's promising winger Lee Cook.
