IT'S been another season of trials and tribulations – with a few successes along the way – for Portsmouth, but one constant amidst all the mayhem has been the form of Matt Tubbs.

The 30-year-old striker, who began his professional career with Crawley who he helped win promotion to the League Two in 2011, didn’t arrive at Fratton Park until January, but still managed to score nine goals for Pompey.

Add that to the 12 league goals he scored whilst on loan at AFC Wimbledon from Bournemouth, for whom he was a club record signing in 2012, and you have a very credible season.

Hence his inclusion in the PFA League Two team of the year – and now another personal accolade in the shape of the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award.

Matt was a late starter in terms of his professional career – he didn’t make his first league appearance until 2008 when he was 24 – but he’s certainly made a big impact in recent seasons.

Former Pompey boss Andy Awford knew exactly what he was getting when he signed Tubbs in January, and the new Fratton Park hero has not disappointed.

Awford said at the time: “His record is there for everyone to see and I'm looking forward to him coming in and scoring some goals and us moving up the table. He is a proven goalscorer who has scored goals throughout his career because he gets into the right places.”

Tubbs, who scored his first Portsmouth hat-trick in a 6-2 win against Cambridge in February, had set his sights on the play-offs when he joined the club, now plans to fire them into promotion contention next season. Given his track record, you wouldn’t put it past him.

He says: “I’ve signed a two-and-a-half-year deal here and during that time I want to be celebrating promotions. “I’ve been lucky enough to have a few of them in my career and there’s no better feeling.”
