Portsmouth are closing in on installing Avram Grant as their new manager.
The Barclays Premier League strugglers are moving quickly to appoint a new boss after Paul Hart was sacked on Tuesday.
Former Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson is among the contenders but Portsmouth are leaning towards handing the reins to their director of football Grant.
The Israeli is expected to be awarded his work permit on Thursday, clearing the path for his unveiling.
Pompey executive director Mark Jacob - who is close to owner Ali Al Faraj - told the Portsmouth News: 'Obviously we want to appoint a new manager as soon as possible, but it is not a decision we are interested in rushing.
'It's all about planning for the long term. We are not looking to appoint somebody only to have to review it again soon.
'It may well happen after the weekend, we'll have to see. We want to give ourselves every opportunity and chance to survive this season - and that means appointing the right manager.
'A long-term goal is there and there are plans in place whereby we want to achieve things not just three months down the line but also three years. The R word (relegation) does not exist in my vocabulary, it's not an option.'

Portsmouth fans are fearful over the club's attempts to retain their place in the top-flight but Jacob has urged them to rally behind the team - starting with the big clash against Manchester United on Saturday.
'We want everyone to stick together and cheer the team on on Saturday,' he added. 'We want that 12th man supporting us. Manchester United haven't got a very good record at Fratton Park, so let's make sure that continues. We need everybody pulling in the same direction.'
