Portsmouth v Tottenham preview

16 October 2009 11:14
It comes as no surprise that Harry Redknapp takes centre stage as Tottenham Hotspur travel to Portsmouth this weekend. The Spurs boss returns to Fratton Park for the first time since quitting the club for a second time and he can expect a fiery reception from the South Coast fans, who have seen their side suffer this campaign. There will be a feel of familiarity on the pitch too with a host of players having played for both clubs and are expected to line up in the return to Premier League action following the international break. The likes of Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar, who both found the net for their countries midweek, ditched Pompey in the summer to join Redknapp at White Hart Lane. And the duo will be looking to keep their places in the Spurs first team after picking up their first starts of the season in the 2-2 draw at Bolton. Defensive boostRedknapp has some positive news on his defence with Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate both expected to be fit for the weekend fixture and the pair will be pressing for the centre-back roles. King has recovered from the hamstring injury sustained at Chelsea last month and should slot into the heart of the defence while Woodgate, who has yet to feature this term after pre-season groin problem, should make the bench. It remains to be seen if Wilson Palacios will be included in the squad for the Saturday's game after being ordered by the Honduran military to celebrate the country's World Cup qualification. The midfielder will fly back to England on Saturday and could be named as a substitute, meaning Tom Huddlestone will move from defence back into his familiar role in the centre of the park. Ex-Pompey striker Jermain Defoe, who has been suffering with a hand complaint, will be vying with club captain Robbie Keane and Crouch for a place in a two-man attack. Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has suffered pain and tenderness while trying to jog for the first time since breaking his fibula against Birmingham and is likely to be out for longer than expected. MomentumPompey go into Saturday's fixture on a belated high after finally breaking their duck with the 1-0 win at Wolves in their last outing. Paul Hart's side had failed to pick up a single point before the Molineux success and will be desperate to keep the momentum going following the international break. But the Pompey boss can expect a stern test against high-flying Spurs and Hart will have to make do without regular performer Jamie O'Hara, who is ineligible to play as Spurs are his parent club. Hart will take a look at the trio of Herman Hreidarsson, Richard Hughes and Papa Bouba Diop who all face fitness tests, with midfield duo Hughes and Diop hoping to contend with Hayden Mullins to replace O'Hara. Goalkeeper David James is a doubt after picking up a knee injury on England duty, so either Antti Niemi or Jamie Ashdown could deputise if the veteran shot-stopper fails to shake off the problem. Possible starting XIs: Portsmouth: James, Ben-Haim, Wilson, Kaboul, Finnan, Smith, Yebda, Mullins, Brown, Prince-Boateng, Dindane. Tottenham: Cudicini, Assou-Ekotto, King, Bassong, Corluka, Kranjcar, Huddlestone, Jenas, Lennon, Crouch, Keane.
