Whatmaugh worry for Pompey

Jack Whatmaugh is a major doubt for Portsmouth's clash with Newport.

The 17-year-old defender suffered an ankle injury against Stoke in midweek and left the Britannia Stadium on crutches as a precaution.

Boss Andy Awford made eight changes for that 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat and is set to recall the likes of Ben Chorley, Nicky Shorey, Danny Hollands, James Dunne and Craig Westcarr.

But Alex Wynter (head), Patrick Agyemang (hamstring), Danny East (groin), Michael Pope (Achilles), Tom Craddock and Wes Fogden (both knee) are still on the sidelines.

Newport will be without striker Rene Howe after he underwent surgery this week.

The 27-year-old former Burton forward went under the knife to repair a thigh injury sustained in training and he could be ruled out for the rest of the campaign which is a huge blow for manager Justin Edinburgh who could also be without forwards Chris Zebroski (groin) and Aaron O'Connor (dead leg).

Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Day, who has arrived on a four-week loan deal, looks set for his first start for the club in place of Lenny Pidgeley.

Ryan Jackson looks certain to keep his place after a man-of-the-match display against Burton having edged captain Andy Sandell out of the starting line-up.
