Portsmouth still searching for assistant manager after failed bid for Gary McAllister

The former Scotland midfielder held talks over the position - vacant since Brian Kidd's summer departure for Manchester City - on Monday. However, neither party could reach an agreement, leaving Portsmouth still searching for a No 2 to manager Paul Hart. [LNB]Hart said: "We couldn't agree anything. [LNB]Former Leeds and Coventry manager McAllister had previously turned down a part-time job as assistant to Scotland national team coach George Burley, deciding instead to try and land a role with a Premier League club. [LNB]The 44-year-old, who also enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Leeds and the Sky Blues as well as Liverpool, had confirmed on Monday that he was "coming down for a chat" and hinted that "things might become a bit clearer soon". [LNB]Portsmouth are bottom of the Premier League having lost their opening seven matches, the worst start by a team in the top flight since Manchester United in 1930-31. [LNB]After taking charge at Elland Road in January 2008, McAllister almost led Leeds to promotion, but the Elland Road club lost out to Doncaster in the League One play-off final. [LNB]But the club failed to push on during the following season and chairman Ken Bates called time on McAllister's Leeds career in December 2008 with the team lying in ninth position in the table.
