Portsmouth on the brink of extinction

Portsmouth support group SOS Pompey have said the crisis club are approaching closure.

The League One club face liquidation in less than two weeks, with a potential takeover deal in the works if the club can remove their eight highest earners from the wage bill.

With the club aiming to implement a £5k-a-week wage cap, the top earners will need to leave, with Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim picking up £36,000 a week.

Fans presented players with a written plea at the training ground entrance on Monday, hoping players would accept a compromise on their salaries or find a new club.

Alongside Tal Ben Haim, Portsmouth also have seven other players picking up enormous pay packets.

Greg Halford, Erik Huseklepp, Dave Kitson, Liam Lawrence, David Norris, Luke Varney and Kanu also remain at Fratton Park.

Luke Varney is near to a move to Leeds, with Norris also rumoured to be set for a move to Elland Road.

Nigerian forward Kanu is hoping to pick up a £3m compensation fee from Pompey before leaving.

Administrator Trevor Birch believes the players are in a tough situation, but he has called on them to make history and save the club from liquidation.

"At the end of the day, they have contracts and they expect those contracts to be paid and that is not an unreasonable stance for them to take

"But the well is dry and if they stay and keep their demands going then there will be no club and they will end up with nothing."

"Trevor Birch has to save the club and people could lose their livelihoods as a result," he said.

"That is scandalous because the people who put us in this mess are still clinging to the wreckage and claiming millions of pounds off the club.

"But the players could still be part of history and save this club."
