Portsmouth all but secure play-off place with victory over Wycombe

Goals from Gary Roberts and Conor Chaplin left Portsmouth a point away from confirming a Sky Bet League Two play-off place after beating Wycombe 2-1.

Roberts tapped in seven minutes from half-time before substitute Chaplin doubled Pompey's lead midway through the second period to end the Chairboys own top-seven dreams.

Marc McNulty had two gloriously fashioned chances early on - twice beating Anthony Stewart, but twice bending over the top from outside the area.

It did not matter as Pompey finally took the lead in the 37th minute when McNulty scampered down the right flank and drilled an inviting ball into the middle for Roberts to slide in.

Kal Naismith could have doubled the lead but saw his low shot ricochet off the post, but Chaplin made it two after running in behind and slipping past Ryan Allsop.

Wycombe improved after the interval and Paul Jones had to be at his best to tip Gozie Ugwu's header round the post before Sido Jombati rocketed a free-kick into the top corner on 73 minutes to get one back for the visitors.

Kieron Freeman hacked Southampton loanee Jason McCarthy's thrashed effort off the line and at the other end Roberts failed to beat Allsop when through in a busy finale.
